FAQ
Where is your office located?
My office address is:
1661 Old Philadelphia Pike, Unit C
Lancaster, PA 17602
My telephone number is (814) 810-8626.
What ages do you see?
As a board-certified psychiatrist in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry, my expertise, training, and experience allow me to treat patients as young as five years old and the geriatric population.
What conditions do you work with?
I can diagnose and treat a broad range of mental health conditions – ADHD, Anxiety, OCD, Opiate Addiction, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Postpartum Depression, and Treatment-Resistant Depression.
What makes your approach different from a traditional psychiatry practice?
Unlike traditional psychiatry, which often focuses only on prescribing medications, we take a comprehensive, root-cause approach to treatment-resistant depression.
At New Direction Functional Psychiatry, we combine:
- In-depth medication evaluations
- Nutritional and supplement guidance
- Brain-based therapies like TMS and EEG-based interventions
- Innovative FDA-approved treatments like Spravato® nasal spray
We treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.
Who is the best fit for your services?
We specialize in helping women ages 30 – 50 who have lived with depression for years, tried one or more medications with limited results, and are ready for a more advanced and integrative care plan. Many of our patients are mothers or professionals seeking to reclaim energy, joy, and emotional balance.
Nevertheless, I am trained and certified as a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist as well as in addiction medicine.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Most major insurance plans cover the initial evaluation and many components of our treatment plan, including Spravato® and TMS therapy when medically appropriate. We’ll verify your benefits and help you navigate any costs upfront.
What should I expect during the in-person evaluation?
Your first appointment is a thorough, in-person evaluation. We review your medical and mental health history, assess current symptoms and past treatment outcomes, and begin building a customized six-part care plan.
This care plan may include:
- Medication review
- Nutritional support and advanced lab testing (Genova Diagnostics)
- Brainwave regulation therapies
- FDA-approved neuromodulation treatments (TMS, Spravato®)
- Targeted nutritional supplementation
You’ll leave with a clear, actionable roadmap.
What is Spravato® (esketamine nasal spray)?
Spravato® is an FDA-approved nasal spray used for treatment-resistant depression. It works differently from traditional antidepressants by targeting the glutamate system in the brain. It’s administered under medical supervision in our office, typically twice a week at first.
Many patients notice significant mood, energy, and motivation improvements within weeks.
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapy that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate brain areas involved in mood regulation.
It’s ideal for patients who haven’t found relief from medications or want a drug-free option. Sessions are done in-office and are well tolerated, with no systemic side effects.
We often recommend TMS alongside lifestyle support and nutritional interventions for the best results.
What is “brainwave dysregulation,” and how do you treat it?
Some patients with long-standing depression experience irregular brainwave activity that affects sleep, focus, and emotional regulation.
We assess this using neurophysiological tools and apply evidence-based treatments to help retrain the brain for improved function. We do brain mapping with BrainCore and offer both BrainCore and Microcurrent neurofeedback therapy.
What kind of supplements do you recommend?
Based on your symptoms, bloodwork, and specialty labs, we may recommend targeted, research-based supplements to support your mood, energy, gut-brain connection, and overall mental clarity. We do not overprescribe and only use what is clinically justified.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
While the initial evaluation must be in person, many follow-up services, such as medication management or lab reviews, can be done virtually. Specific treatments, like Spravato® and TMS, must be administered in the office.
How do I get started?
Call or text (814) 810-8626 or email newdirection1661@gmail.com to schedule your in-person evaluation. We’ll guide you through insurance verification, what to bring, and how to prepare.
We’re here to walk with you – step by step – toward lasting healing.
What is the difference between therapy and medication, and which is right for me?
Deciding between therapy and medication to treat mental health conditions is a common concern.
Therapy is a process of exploring and addressing underlying emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues with a mental health professional. At the same time, medication uses prescription drugs to manage symptoms of mental health conditions. Both approaches have advantages and limitations, and treatment choice depends on individual needs and preferences.
It’s essential to consult with a mental health professional to assess your needs and recommend an appropriate course of action. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share your concerns to find the best approach.
How long will it take to start feeling better, and what can I expect during treatment?
The length of time it takes to start feeling better and the treatment process itself can vary depending on the individual’s needs and the specific mental health condition. It’s important to remember that healing is a process, and progress can take time.
Some people may begin to feel better after a few sessions of therapy, while others may take longer or may also require medication. Your mental health professional can work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and goals.
Throughout the process, you can expect a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your emotions, develop coping skills, and work toward your personal wellness goals. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself, and don’t hesitate to communicate any concerns or questions.
How can I address the stigma surrounding mental health and feel comfortable seeking treatment?
Dealing with the stigma surrounding mental health can be tough, but it’s important to remember that mental health conditions are common and treatable.
One way to combat stigma is to speak up and share your experiences with others. Talking about mental health can help break down stereotypes and encourage others to seek help.
Finding a mental health professional you feel comfortable with can make a big difference. Look for a provider who is understanding, supportive, and nonjudgmental.
Finally, don’t be afraid to take care of yourself and prioritize your mental health. Seeking treatment is a brave step and can help you feel better and live a fuller version of yourself.
